When people learned that Isaac and Robert Toussie have donated so extensively to a myriad of charitable organizations over the years they were very impressed by the Brooklyn entrepreneurs conviction. But when it comes to the Toussies, long-time Brooklynites already know how generous they can be. Known as “borough chaperones,” Toussie family philanthropy have deep roots in the community, though in recent years their charitable outlook has taken on an increasingly national and even international character.
Devoted to promoting justice and kindness towards their fellows, pater familias Robert Toussie alone has donated more than $28,000 to several local charities, including churches, food banks, and schools over the last several decades. Following in his footsteps, son Isaac Toussie has often made his own contributions to the family tradition. Brooklynites will all remember the Toussies and what they’ve done, even without the recognition given by dignitaries such as President Bush. Isaac and Robert Toussie are absolutely dedicated to improving the lives of others, as is evident in the many lives they’ve touched. Indeed, more than anything else, charity may be said to be the real family business!
Robert and his son mean to continue the family tradition of improving the quality of life of the less fortunate by funding such children’s charities as Boys Town, institutions like the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and inner-city food banks like City Harvest. They are also working with several medical groups to help the sick, blind, and poor through life-saving research studies. It is a well-documented fact that thousands of people have benefited from the Toussies: lives have been saved, suffering has been diminished, and illnesses have been treated and, in some cases, even cured.
Robert Toussie is the family patriarch, the founder of its fortune, but he has never forgotten his roots, donating both time and money over the years. The elder Toussie received his M.B.A. from Columbia University and founded the family fortune through department store and various other businesses, most notably those involving real estate. He has been just as successful in marriage, with over forty years of marriage resulting in four children and six grandchildren. Son Isaac is the latest of the family to get involved in good works, following in his father’s footsteps in real estate. In his spare time, he play piano, practices martial arts, and studies ethics and law.
